Getting Started

Getting started with s&box

Buy it on Steam, install the editor, and you can play community games immediately — or start making your own.

1. Get s&box on Steam

s&box is available on Steam (App ID 590830, $19.99) for Windows. Installing it gives you the full sandbox — the engine, the editor, and the Hammer-style map tools — plus the in-game browser of community games.

2. Play community games

You don't need to install or subscribe to anything to play — community games run with a single click from the in-game browser, and you can party up with friends without setting up a server. Assets stream from the cloud, so there's no manual downloading.

3. Build from source (optional)

The engine source is on GitHub under the MIT License. If you want to compile it yourself, Facepunch lists these requirements:

GitVisual Studio 2026.NET 10 SDK
