The short version

Deadlock is a game by Valve that blends a third-person hero shooter with a MOBA. Two teams of six fight across a lane-based map, using gun-play, hero abilities, and bought items to break the enemy's defenses. It runs on Valve's Source 2 engine and is free-to-play.

As of mid-2026 it is still in early development — Valve describes it as having “lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay,” and access is invite-only.

The setting

Deadlock is set in a stylised, occult-tinged alternate 20th-century New York City — nicknamed the “Cursed Apple.” Two rival “Patrons” grant power to teams of heroes, who clash over a ritual fought through the city's lanes.
