The Instant Camera
The Instant Camera is a tool that captures Polaroid-style Photographs in game -- a way to keep a tangible memento of a moment rather than just a screenshot. It's craftable, but only by players who own the SUNBurn DLC, so be aware up front that it's a paid add-on, not a free base-game item.
The recipe is cheap once you have the DLC: 1 Gear + 75 Metal Fragments. Gears come from crates, supply drops, and yellow barrels, and metal fragments from recycling or smelting -- so it's an easy craft. Put it on your hotbar and you're ready to shoot.
Taking Photos
The camera controls are simple once you know them:
- Primary fire: take a photo.
- Secondary fire: zoom in and out.
- Reload: change the focus mode.
- In Manual Focus mode, hold SHIFT + RIGHT-CLICK and move the mouse up/down to pull focus precisely (default binds).
A framing tip the community uses: lowering your FOV (e.g. to 70) effectively gives you more zoom, handy for tighter or more distant shots. Steady your aim before you press the shutter -- the photo captures exactly what's in frame at that instant.
Photographs & Picture Frames
Each shot becomes a Photograph item -- click it in your inventory to view the image. The real fun is displaying them: photographs slot into Picture Frames mounted on your walls, so you can decorate a base or build a gallery of your wipe's best moments.
There are a few frame shapes to match your shot. Photographs render at a native 854x480, and the frames come in Landscape (320x240), Large (320x240), and Portrait (320x384) -- so pick the frame orientation that fits the photo you took. A wall of framed photos is a popular way to give a base personality beyond bare stone and sheet metal.
Creative & Practical Uses
Beyond decoration, players put the camera to clever use:
- Communicate without a mic: take a photo, write on it, and hand it over -- a faster way to pass a message than crafting a Note, and you can include a visual.
- In-game advertising: snap a photo of your roleplay shop or base, write its grid location on it, and leave it somewhere busy like the Outpost recycler so other players find you.
- Gifting: photographs can be given to other players, so a shared screenshot of a clan moment becomes a literal in-game keepsake you can pass around.
It's not essential survival gear, but for roleplay, base decoration, and low-tech communication, the Instant Camera is a genuinely useful (and fun) tool.
