When you first spawn in Rust, gather stone, wood, and cloth to craft a Stone Hatchet and Stone Pickaxe. Find a quiet area near a road but away from monuments to build a small 2x1 starter base. Prioritize getting a Tool Cupboard, sleeping bag, and a locked door. Then explore nearby Tier 0 monuments like Gas Station and Supermarket for basic loot.
Practice spray patterns on aim training servers (search for 'UKN' or 'aim train' in the server browser). Learn the AK-47, MP5, and Thompson patterns first. Position yourself on high ground when possible, always move unpredictably, and carry medical supplies. Watch PvP-focused content creators and practice daily.
For solo players, a 2x2 with honeycomb is the best starter base. It is cheap to build and maintain, provides good protection relative to its size, and is quick to construct. Upgrade to a 2x1 bunker design once you have sheet metal doors. Always use airlocks and place your TC in a secure location.
