Military Tunnels Layout and Navigation

~2 min read

Military Tunnels is one of the highest-tier monuments in Rust, featuring an extensive underground tunnel network with heavy scientist resistance and some of the best PvE loot in the game.

Entrance locations: Military Tunnels has two entrances. The main entrance is a large concrete bunker opening set into a hillside, usually near a road. The side entrance is a smaller access point near railway tracks on the opposite side of the monument. Both entrances are marked by military structures and sandbag fortifications.

Tunnel layout overview: - The tunnel system is roughly linear with branches. From the main entrance, a wide corridor leads into the tunnel network. - The first section is a long corridor with side rooms (barracks-style areas with crates and barrel spawns). - A central junction connects the main corridor to the armory wing, the storage wing, and the exit passage. - The armory wing is behind the blue keycard door and contains the monument's highest-value loot. - The storage wing has additional crates and connects to the side entrance.

Navigation tips: - The tunnels are dark in many sections. A Weapon Flashlight attachment, Mining Hat, or Headlamp is strongly recommended. Without light, you will walk into scientist ambushes blind. - Use the painted markings on the walls as landmarks. Yellow arrows typically point toward the main entrance. Red markings indicate the armory direction. - Sound carries distinctly in the tunnels. You can hear scientist footsteps, door openings, and other players from considerable distances. Use this audio intelligence to plan your movement. - The tunnel floors have occasional rubble and debris that can block movement. Keep your path clear and avoid getting stuck in tight spots during combat.

Scientist Waves and Combat Difficulty

~2 min read

Military Tunnels is heavily guarded by multiple types of scientists with varying difficulty levels. Understanding the wave system helps you manage ammunition and medical supplies.

Scientist distribution: - Main entrance area: 2-3 standard blue scientists (150 HP) with pistols/SMGs. Easy to dispatch. - First corridor: 3-4 standard scientists spaced throughout the corridor and side rooms. They use cover and shoot from doorways. - Central junction: 2-3 scientists, mix of standard and heavy (300 HP). The junction is a dangerous area because scientists can fire from multiple directions. - Armory approach: 3-4 heavy scientists with LR-300s or M249s. These are the toughest enemies in the tunnel system. - Armory interior: 2-3 heavy scientists guarding the Elite Crates. They are in close quarters with limited cover for the attacker.

Total scientist count: 14-20 scientists depending on respawn timing and server conditions. Heavy scientists represent approximately 40 percent of the total and account for most player deaths.

Combat difficulty rating: Military Tunnels is rated 8/10 difficulty for PvE content. The combination of heavy scientists, tight corridors, limited retreat options, and darkness creates challenging combat that demands good aim and tactical awareness.

Scientist respawn behavior: Scientists respawn approximately every 15-20 minutes after being killed. If you take too long clearing the tunnel system, early sections may repopulate. Speed and efficiency matter -- do not linger in cleared areas.

Danger zones: The armory approach corridor is the most dangerous section. Heavy scientists here have long sightlines down the hallway and deal significant damage with their high-tier weapons. Approach this section with full health, fresh medical supplies, and your best weapons. Do not attempt it with low HP or limited ammo.

Elite Crate Locations and Keycard Requirements

~2 min read

Military Tunnels contains some of the best loot in Rust, rivaling Launch Site and Large Oil Rig. The primary targets are the Elite Crates in the armory.

Keycard progression: 1. Green card: Required to access the initial secured area. The green card reader is at a door in the first corridor section. A fuse box is on the adjacent wall. 2. Blue card: Required to access the armory. The blue card reader is deeper in the tunnel system, past the central junction. A second fuse is required.

Bring: 1 green keycard, 1 blue keycard, and 2 fuses. Keycards and fuses are consumed on use.

Elite Crate locations: - Armory (blue card room): 2 Elite Crates on weapon racks/tables. These are the primary loot targets. Each Elite Crate can contain AK-47s, LR-300s, Bolt Actions, L96s, C4, Rockets, and other end-game items. - Secondary storage area: 1 Elite Crate in a room off the central junction (does not require a keycard, just clearing the scientists guarding it).

Military crate locations: - Scattered throughout the tunnel system in side rooms and along the main corridors. - 4-6 military crates total, each containing mid-to-high tier weapons, components, and medical supplies. - These provide additional value beyond the Elite Crates and are worth looting during your run.

Regular crate and barrel locations: - Abundant throughout the tunnel system. Barrels line the corridors and side rooms. - 8-12 regular crates and 15-20 barrel spawns provide components and scrap.

Total loot value per complete run: 400-700 scrap including recycled components, plus high-tier weapons and explosives from Elite Crates. A lucky run can yield an AK-47 and C4 from a single Elite Crate, worth over 1,000 scrap equivalent.

Required Gear and Medical Supplies

~2 min read

Military Tunnels demands more preparation than most monuments. Under-gearing is the primary cause of failed runs.

Minimum gear requirements: - Weapon: Thompson, Custom SMG, or Pump Shotgun (close-range weapons excel in tunnels). A Semi-Auto Rifle works but is less ideal in tight spaces. - Ammo: 200+ rounds for your primary weapon. Heavy scientists absorb many rounds, and running dry mid-fight is fatal. - Armor: Road Sign armor set (minimum) or Metal armor (recommended). Heavy scientist weapons deal significant damage through basic clothing. - Medical supplies: 10+ Medical Syringes, 15+ Bandages. The frequent combat engagements drain medical supplies quickly. - Light source: Weapon Flashlight attachment (preferred), Mining Hat, or Headlamp. The flashlight attachment is best because it keeps both hands free for combat. - Keycards and fuses: 1 green card, 1 blue card, 2 fuses. - Food and water: Bring cooked meat and a water container. The run takes 20-40 minutes, and you will be too deep in the tunnels to forage.

Recommended gear (optimal): - Weapon: AK-47 or LR-300 (dominates in all range brackets). - Secondary: Pump Shotgun for close-quarters armory fighting. - Ammo: 300+ rounds for primary, 20+ shells for shotgun. - Armor: Full metal set (Metal Facemask + Metal Chestplate). - Medical: 15+ Syringes, 20+ Bandages, 2 Large Medkits for emergencies.

Gear risk assessment: A full Military Tunnels kit costs approximately 2,000-4,000 scrap equivalent. Losing this kit to death inside the tunnels or to PvP players outside is expensive. Only run Military Tunnels with gear you can afford to lose. If your loadout represents a significant portion of your total wealth, use a cheaper monument until you have surplus gear.

Speed Run Routes

~2 min read

Experienced players can clear Military Tunnels in 15-20 minutes using optimized routes that minimize time in low-value areas and maximize loot-per-minute.

Speed run route (main entrance): 1. Enter main entrance. Kill the 2-3 entrance scientists without stopping (~60 seconds). 2. Sprint through the first corridor, killing scientists as you encounter them. Do not loot side rooms on the first pass (~2 minutes). 3. At the central junction, clear the junction scientists and head directly for the armory (~90 seconds). 4. Green card the first door and proceed to the blue card door (~60 seconds for puzzles). 5. Clear the armory heavy scientists. This is the hardest section -- take your time and use cover (~3-5 minutes). 6. Loot the 2 Elite Crates and any military crates in the armory (~2 minutes). 7. Exit via the most direct route, now looting crates and barrels along the way (~5 minutes).

Total time: 15-20 minutes for a complete loot-and-exit.

Speed run route (side entrance, advanced): 1. Enter through the side entrance. Fewer scientists guard this approach. 2. Navigate directly to the central junction, bypassing the first corridor entirely. 3. Clear junction scientists and head for the armory. 4. Complete the keycard puzzles and loot Elite Crates. 5. Exit through the main entrance, looting the first corridor rooms on the way out.

This route saves approximately 3-5 minutes by skipping the initial corridor clear. However, the side entrance is less familiar to most players, and the navigation can be confusing without practice.

Speed run tips: - Pre-arrange your hotbar before entering: primary weapon in slot 1, shotgun in slot 2, meds in slot 3, bandages in slot 4. - Do not stop to loot barrels during the initial push. Barrel loot is low value compared to your time. - Kill scientists with headshots. A headshot with the SAR deals 102 damage to standard scientists, killing them in 2 hits instead of 3-4. - Sprint between combat encounters. Walking cautiously through cleared areas wastes time.

Group vs Solo Strategies

~2 min read

The difficulty of Military Tunnels varies dramatically based on team size. Solo runs are challenging but rewarding, while group runs are faster and safer.

Solo strategy: - Pace yourself. You cannot afford to take damage from multiple scientists simultaneously with no teammate to draw fire. - Use doorways and corners as chokepoints. Let scientists walk into your sightline rather than pushing into rooms. - Bring extra medical supplies (15+ syringes instead of 10). Without a teammate to cover you, every fight costs more HP. - Consider bringing a Pump Shotgun as your primary for the armory section. At point-blank range in tight corridors, the shotgun kills heavy scientists in 2-3 shots. - Place a sleeping bag hidden near the entrance before going in. If you die inside, you respawn nearby and can attempt a body recovery run. - Budget 30-40 minutes for a complete solo run. Do not rush -- solo deaths inside Military Tunnels are extremely costly.

Duo strategy: - One player leads (clears scientists) while the other follows (provides backup fire and heals the leader). - Split into two roles at the armory: one pushes through the door while the other covers from the doorway. - Loot sharing: one player grabs Elite Crate loot, the other grabs military crates. This speeds up the looting phase. - Budget 20-25 minutes for a complete duo run.

Group strategy (3-4 players): - Assign a point man (pushes forward), two flankers (clear side rooms), and a rear guard (watches for player followers). - The point man uses a close-range weapon (SMG or shotgun) while flankers use rifles. - Groups can clear the entire tunnel system in 15 minutes, including full looting. - The main risk for groups is PvP outside the tunnels. Having 3-4 players underground means no one is watching your base or the monument exits.

General advice: Regardless of team size, clear the monument entrance of enemy sleeping bags before entering. Hostile players may have planted bags near the entrance to respawn and counter you when you exit with loot. Check behind rocks, in bushes, and inside nearby structures for hidden bags.
