Weapons & Attachments Guide

The full weapon progression ladder from Eoka to AK, which ammo each gun eats, and the two-weapon opener/finisher habit — plus every attachment (sights, silencer, muzzle boost/brake, lasersight) and its real trade-off.

01

The Two-Weapon System & Ammo

The single best habit in Rust gunplay is carrying an OPENER and a FINISHER. Tag someone at range with an opener (Crossbow/SAR), then swap instantly to a fast finisher (Nailgun/SMG/Shotgun) instead of trying to reload while they rush you -- reloading mid-rush is how you die.

Ammo families to plan your farm around: - Pistol Bullets: Nailgun (uses Nails), Revolver, Custom SMG, Thompson. - 5.56 Rifle Ammo: SAR, AK-47, LR-300, Bolt Action. - Handmade Shells: Eoka, Double Barrel, Pump, Waterpipe. - Arrows: Hunting Bow, Crossbow, Compound Bow.

Focus your scrap on ONE primary (usually Custom SMG -> SAR -> AK) before branching into explosives and luxuries.

02

Primitive Tier

What you fight with on wipe day, before a workbench:

  • Eoka Pistol: fires only after a random number of flint strikes -- pure RNG -- but a point-blank buckshot can one-shot a fresh spawn. A gamble weapon for wipe-start and eco raids; over time it loses more fights than it wins.
  • Hunting Bow: the classic first ranged weapon. Cheap, fine for hunting and ambushes, obsolete once firearms appear.
  • Crossbow: the king of primitive precision -- high headshot damage and cheap to replace. Its slow reload is exactly why you pair it with a finisher rather than trying to re-cock it under pressure.
  • Blowpipe: the Jungle biome's silent stealth weapon -- one shot per reload, crafted from basic materials, with four dart types (basic wood, incapacitate for a vision blur, scatter for a shotgun-style spread, and radiation). Built for a quiet jungle ambush, not a stand-up fight.

None of these go away entirely -- a good bow player with movement can still wreck geared opponents.

03

Early & Mid Game

Once you have a workbench, the value guns appear:

  • Nailgun: your first proper firearm -- strong up close, dirt cheap to feed with Nails.
  • Revolver / Double Barrel: early sidearms and finishers.
  • Custom SMG (Workbench 1): the best gun-per-scrap in the game -- a 30-round mag built from an SMG Body, a Metal Spring, and a little HQM.
  • Thompson (Workbench 2): the mid-game value king and ultimate snowball gun -- cheap, easy recoil, deadly close-to-mid. Don't over-spray; burst 6-10 rounds to keep the cone tight.
  • SAR (Workbench 2): the reliable ranged option, forgiving compared to the AK. Crouch and sit still and it becomes a laser -- a good SAR player beats a sloppy AK player.

Tommy when you're solo and need to end close fights fast; SAR when you have teammates and time to aim.

04

The Endgame AK

The AK-47 (Assault Rifle) has topped every Rust tier list since launch. It hits hard at mid and long range, has the highest skill ceiling in the game, and -- crucially -- crafts and repairs relatively cheaply for its power, so you can bring it to almost any fight. It's not the absolute best in every single role (the SAR is more forgiving, shotguns rule a doorway), but it's the best COMPLETE package.

The one discipline that matters: don't full-spray at 50+ meters. The AK's recoil pattern punishes a held trigger at range -- if you're missing, burst and reset your aim between bursts. Master the pattern and it's the weapon every other gun is measured against. It eats 5.56 Rifle Ammo, so a steady sulfur/gunpowder supply is what really keeps an AK fed.

05

Attachments

Mods drag onto a weapon's mod slots (and back off into storage). Each is a trade-off, not a free upgrade:

  • Holosight: a clean holographic dot -- the standard all-purpose sight for close-to-mid fights.
  • 8x Zoom Scope: long-range magnification with slightly slower sway and a tighter aim cone; the sniping pick.
  • Weapon Lasersight: cuts aim sway and tightens the firing cone for faster target acquisition -- but the dot is visible to EVERYONE, and it shares the under-barrel slot with the flashlight (can't run both). Toggle with F.
  • Silencer: hides your sound AND muzzle flash so enemies can't locate you, and reduces sway/recoil -- at a real cost of roughly 25% less bullet velocity and damage. A stealth/utility choice, not a damage one.
  • Muzzle Boost: ~10% faster fire rate, paid for with ~10% less damage and velocity -- close-range aggression.
  • Muzzle Brake: a big recoil cut (~50%) but it widens your aim cone a lot, so accuracy at range suffers. Great for spray-down close fights, bad for picking distant targets.
