Primitive Mode Guide

Rust's official Primitive game mode — a world where high-tech knowledge is lost, so there are no guns: just swords, shields, bows, and craftable siege weapons. What's removed, the era system, restricted monuments, and how to find Primitive servers.

01

What Primitive Mode Is

Primitive is an official, optional game mode (from the February 2025 Primitive Update) that answers a simple question: what if the early game lasted FOREVER? It imagines a distant future where the knowledge of high-tech items has been lost, leaving islanders able to craft only basic gear.

Like Hardcore and Softcore, it's a server-wide setting -- it doesn't change normal Rust, you opt in by joining a Primitive server. It strips out modern weapons, end-game monuments, most NPCs, and the higher building/tech tiers, pushing everything back to simpler technology and siege-style raiding. If the rush to full-auto rifles is what you DON'T like about Rust, Primitive is built for you.

02

Combat: Swords, Shields & Bows

The defining change is that modern firearms are gone. Combat goes back to direct, deliberate confrontation:

  • You fight with a sword and shield up close, and a crossbow or bow at range -- the Primitive Update added a new bow and shields alongside the mode.
  • Without rifles, fights are about positioning, shield play, and committing to a duel rather than spraying from cover.

This completely re-weights PvP: there's no "I'll just craft an AK" power spike to rush toward, so skill with primitive weapons and smart engagements decide fights for the whole wipe, not just the first hour.

03

Siege Weapons

To keep raiding alive without C4 and rockets, the Primitive Update added four craftable, deployable Siege Weapons built for early-game raiding -- including a battering ram, a catapult, and a siege tower.

They're crafted and deployed out in the world, and beyond the craft cost they need extra materials and a Hammer to assemble. A catapult lobs at a base from range, a battering ram pounds a wall or door directly, and a siege tower gets attackers up and over -- turning raids into medieval sieges instead of boom-stacking a wall. They're the answer to "how do I raid when explosives don't exist," and they make Primitive raiding feel completely different from vanilla.

04

Restricted Monuments & Loot

Primitive doesn't just limit crafting -- it limits the WORLD. When the mode is set before a map generates, the high-tier end-game monuments are left off the map entirely. Early indications are that the Nuclear Missile Silo, both Oil Rigs, the Giant Excavator, and Underwater Labs don't spawn under a correctly-initiated Primitive map.

If a server switches the mode on AFTER the map is already generated, those monuments still physically spawn -- but their scientists and loot crates are automatically adjusted to strip out the restricted high-tech items while keeping the same difficulty. Either way the loot table is heavily pared back, so you won't be finding rifles or rockets in a crate. The whole loot economy is built around the primitive tech ceiling.

05

Eras & Finding Servers

Primitive isn't one fixed setting -- server owners control how primitive (or slightly advanced) it is through ERAS. Each era unlocks a bit more gear and crafting, so an admin can run a hard medieval survival or a more structured era-based progression that opens up over time.

To PLAY it: - Official servers running the mode are listed with a "Primitive" server tag -- search that tag in the in-game server browser to find them. - Server owners enable it with `server.gamemode primitive` at initialisation (then restart), and can further tune eras, crafting, loot tables, and limited NPC spawns.

Facepunch treats Primitive (like Hardcore) as an experimental mode it rotates and iterates on, so check the current server browser for active Primitive servers rather than assuming it's always populated.
