Safe Zones: Outpost & Bandit Camp Guide

The two safe zones in Rust — Outpost and Bandit Camp. The facilities each offers, the safe-zone rules that keep you from getting turret-killed, what you can buy with scrap, and how the drone Marketplace works.

01

What Safe Zones Are

Rust has two monuments where combat is policed by automated sentries: the Outpost (also called the Compound) and Bandit Camp. Inside their boundaries you cannot be attacked by other players without consequences, which makes them the social and trading hubs of every server.

Safe zones are where you recycle loot, research items, repair gear, and buy supplies with scrap -- all without the risk of being killed mid-task. New players should learn both early; they are the safest places to convert scavenged loot into useful gear.

02

Safe-Zone Rules (Don't Get Turret-Killed)

Auto-turrets (and, at Outpost, scientists) enforce the peace:

  • Holster your weapon. You can carry weapons, but pulling one out or aiming inside the zone makes the turrets target you.
  • Don't attack anyone. Hitting another player, or firing a shot, flags you as "hostile".
  • The hostility timer: once flagged, you have a short countdown to leave before the turrets open fire, and you can't safely re-enter for roughly 30 minutes. The timer shows on screen.
  • No looting players inside the zone.

A common new-player death is accidentally swinging a tool or firing near the edge. Keep your weapon away inside, and remember the boundary is a hard line -- players will bait you into stepping outside it.

03

Outpost Facilities

The Outpost is the utility hub. Inside you'll typically find:

  • Recycler: break items and components down into raw materials (metal fragments, high quality metal, scrap). The single best reason to visit -- recycle road and barrel loot into crafting materials.
  • Research Table: pay scrap to learn the blueprint of an item you own so you can craft it yourself.
  • Repair Bench: repair damaged weapons, armour, and tools for a fraction of their craft cost.
  • Workbench access for crafting.
  • Vending machines: buy water, low grade fuel, food, medical supplies, components, and more for scrap.

The recycler is often the busiest spot on the server -- watch the safe-zone edge when leaving, as campers wait just outside.

04

Bandit Camp Facilities

Bandit Camp is the gambling-and-vehicles hub. Inside you'll find:

  • The gambling wheel: bet scrap on a spinning wheel for a chance at a multiplied payout. Pure RNG -- fun, but not a reliable income.
  • Vending machines with supplies similar to Outpost.
  • The Air Wolf vendor: buy aircraft for scrap -- the Minicopter (around 750 scrap) and the Scrap Transport Helicopter (around 1,250 scrap). This is the main legitimate way to get a personal helicopter.
  • A recycler and other utility stalls, and a dock on some layouts.

Like Outpost, the perimeter is turret-guarded and the same hostility rules apply.

05

The Drone Marketplace

The Marketplace terminal at Outpost lets you shop from player vending machines across the map without travelling to them. Browse listings, pay, and a delivery drone flies the goods to the Marketplace for you to collect.

This is huge for trading: place your own vending machine at your base and it appears in the Marketplace, so you can buy from others -- and sell to them -- remotely. The drone takes time to deliver and charges a small fee, but it removes the danger of physically travelling to a stranger's shop.

For a deeper dive on making scrap and running a shop, see the trading & economics guide.
